TECHNICAL DRAWING

  1. Drawing is a universal communicator. A drawing can efficiently convey complicated ideas across language and cultural divides. Drawing is the most intuitive means of thinking through ideas and collaborating with others through the design process.
  2. Observational drawing is a powerful tool for investigating the world around us. In developing perceptual drawing skills, we share the practice of early astronomers, natural biologists, inventors, designers, and visual artists, who derived practical insights through careful scrutiny of their surroundings.

This course will bridge these two aspects of drawing, inviting students to sharpen their observational skills by investigating objects and environments and use these insights about form and mechanics to translate their ideas into functional designs.

COURSE GOALS
Understand the roles that different kinds of drawings play in the design process.
Enhance observational skills in order to properly analyze forms and spaces.
Produce sketches using correct geometric relationships and proportions.
Understand and utilize the principles of Perspective.
Understand and utilize the principles of Multiview and Paraline Drawing.
Learn how to read, interpret and produce common working drawings.
Become accustomed to traditional drafting tools and techniques.
Understand and interpret drafting standards and conventional practices.
Apply the principles of scale and dimensioning to design drawings.
